The journey to Lords
In 2020, the men's 1st XI won the Cheshire & Clwyd Group for the first time and went into the National rounds, only to lose at the first hurdle in Yorkshire to Carlton Towers.
This year, with the Group won again, after beating former National Winners Caldy in the Final, Alvanley were drawn away at another former Winner, Michael Atherton's old club, Woodhouses. A tense game was won with the 'best fielding display I've ever seen' according to ex-Alvanley skipper Graham Pashley. Next was Folkton & Flixton (near Scarborough) - also recent national winners. When the rain intervened at Alvanley, the team and considerable following travelled to Scarborough the following week and really put F&F to the sword, winning by 130 runs in a powerhouse performance.
So to the National Quarter Final, again in Yorkshire and again versus recent winners - Houghton Main. This was a low scoring game on a tricky pitch. A large crowd was enthralled throughout though and when Alvanley squeezed home by 28 runs, only one hurdle stood between the Alv and Lords!!
Gues what? Another long away trip! Neyland in South Wales hosted and Alvanley obliged with a 79 run win. The celebrations as the realisation that Lords had been reached - went on and an and on!
